VMware has officially announced the VMware vSphere 6.7 U2 with few new capabilities targeting to deliver a secure and efficient hybrid cloud platform to its valuable customers. It also announced the vSphere Remote Office Branch Office (vSphere ROBO) Enterprise edition along with few updates to vSphere Platinum.
The few rich key features along with the security and operations enhancements highlighted in this release, updated were included to the vCenter Server Converge Tool, new vCenter Audit events and new configuration maximums.
Another important configuration announcement is the depreciation of External Platform Service Controller which adds additional troubleshooting overhead to the vCenter systems. VMware vCenter 6.7 introduced enhanced link mode and it has the capability of adding 15 vCenter Servers along with the embedded PSC so there is no such special requirement of maintaining additional PSC setup with third party loadbalancers.
Updates To The vCenter Server Converge Tool
vCenter server converge tool introduced in vSphere 6.7 U1 and it enables the migration of the External Platform Services Controllers to Embedded Platform Service Controllers. In this announcement it has added a UI to understand the complete picture of the environment to make it more easy to migrate. Added UI provide the relationship between the components such as vCenter and the PSC, embedded vCenter server systems, Health Checks and Replication Status.
UI helps its admin users to migrate the external PSCs to embedded PSCs with a clear understanding about its components and features.
Updates To vCenter Audit Events
There are added Audit and Logging capabilities to vCenter SSO user login activities to have a single pane of clear visibility. Also, user management, SSO group operations, identity source and policy management were added to enhance the operational usage of the system.
Updates To The Virtual Machine Configuration Maximums
The coolest thing about this upgrade is added enhanced Virtual Machine Configuration Maximums, now it can run Virtual Machines with 256 vCPUs 6 TB of vRAM which can be benefitted for the high performance database servers such as SAP Hana.
Not only that, it brings the support of Windows Server 2019 Compatibility with VM Hardware version 15.
Security Enhancements With This Release
vSphere 6.7 U2 provides the protection against the L1TF also known as L1 Terminal Fault without a modified scheduler and it has the capability of capturing the impacted performance due to the vulnerability. Still, customers who are operated with Skylake and older processors relay on the Hypervisor and the Operating System patches. If you haven’t read about the L1TF you can read more information from my previous post. Performance impact can be analyzed with the use of “HTAware Mitigation Tool” and complete guidance can be found here.
